There goes God showing off agian ;-)

It amazing me when I look around this world how much beauty there is, and how easy it can be missed if you don;t pay attention to it.

Here is a clip from one of my all time favorite movies, American Beauty

To this day, Santorini in the Greek Islands is probably the most beautiful places I have ever been in the world

The Philippines sunset wasn't bad either ;-)

Nor was the Egyptian & Israeli desert...(until my camel took off with my backpack and passport and I was left stranded with no food, no water and no possessions, in the middle of the freaking desert).

The ultimate #FAIL

Take a look around today and see the "entire life behind things" as he says in the movie.

Life is Beautiful.
Enjoy it.

Check Out of Society & Check Into 10 Days of Silence...

I was just inspired by a friend  who has started leading meditation workshops in Vancouver.

However I realized that 99.99 percent of the worlds population does  not live Van to attend my friends wicked workshops but may also be interested in mediation programs & retreat centers in their areas, so I wanted to share a great world wide meditation retreat resource that I have experienced first hand in a few different places around the world that was absolutely amazing...

Out all the personal development conferences, coaching programs & seminars I have done, this was the ultimate 'self mastery' experience:

Its called "Vipassana" www.dhamma.org

Its a 10 day silent meditation retreat.

Here is a video I took in 2008 after my 10 days of silence, and I could finally talk again

Imagine, 10 days of not only "no talking", but no cell phones, no computers, no writing, no reading and even no touching & no eye contact is a rule.

Its hardcore.

And yes, its freaking intense.

Here is a blog post I did after my 1st retreat :
http://www.quintoncarlin.com/2009/04/sitting-in-slience-inside-outfor-10.html

A lot of people have breakdowns, freak outs and leave the center before the 10 days is over...but a lot also stay to complete it, and in return get a ton of value and breakthroughs from it (like I did).

Its an awesome grounding and stimulating sense of self & serenity that is created in that silent space, that is so rare and pretty much non existent in our busy, loud and active business centered society.

BTW it's not connected to any specific religion and its non profit donation run organization by people who attend their retreats.

I call Vipassana "the ultimate vacation" :)

So if you ever get (or create), 10 days of no commitments or schedules, I highly recommend checking in, and checking out of society for 10 days of silence and enjoy a intensive meditation retreat.

I think every one should try it once in their life, so put it on your Bucketlist and lemme know how it goes...

Warning / Disclaimer: You'll probably go through cell phone & internet withdraw and need to detox for the first couple days, but after the nightmares, cold sweats & shakes are over, its totally worth it ;-)

Lots to Update..."2012 Summer Summary"

Been quite a while since my last post / update, and in that time a lot has happened both personally & professionally.

Firstly, I have finally finished my contract from "hakwan hell".

I always finish what I start, however long or painful it is, I do what needs to be done.

 Even though I wanted to quit this past gig so many times but I wanted to fulfill my commitment to keep my integrity of the contract agreement I signed even though my director was a total North Korean style dictator.

I will NEVER work with someone like that again, money is not worth personal happiness. Period.

Since then, I got offered a absolutely incredible new contract at a university as English professor, working only 4 days a week, on average only 3 hours per day and getting the same pay from when I was working a full 40h per week in my last contract to now working only about 12h / week currently, with TONS of vacation time. Freaking awesome!

Talk about a sweet upgrade, and my new director is incredibly cool, creative and very supportive at PKNU a Korean National University and I work with a couple of my good friends, so that makes it even better.

Also, I moved (once again), into an absolutely AWESOME new apartment on the most crowded beach in the entire WORLD (according to Guinness Book of World Records)

Here is a picture of it at its peak season.

Its insane.

Here is my view from my bedroom:

Its quite a comfy view and difficult to get out of bed...but the beach is just a couple steps away and its the #1 surf beach so that is awesome to wake up and see waves from 11 stories up to go for a morning surf :-)

                                                                 Surfing = Smiling

                                                                  Insane Crowds.

Went to a few fun events & parties

Traveled to Boracay Island in the Philippines. Awesome trip!

Stayed in an awesome Beach Bamboo hut with great view the whole trip

Went on a number of interesting & entertaining dates with some great girls...

                (btw that is a piercing above her lip, not a birthmark...it took me a while to realize that)

After many close calls (and tempting opportunities) with these stunning Korean Barbi Doll Princesses, I was somehow still able to stay single (by choice).

My current new mantra is: Single & Solo = Simple & Sane.

(Disclaimer: nothing against women, I love them. I actually think women and waves are God's two most incredible, beautiful and pure creations, and in a way I am addicted to both of them (the opposite sex and surfing). But just been in too many relationships recently that were stressful and unsatisfying so I'm consciously changing it up to simplify my lifestyle these days....for now at least while focusing on my work, the new side online business I am starting. and most importantly developing my # 1 relationship, which is with my son :)

And for the record, just because a full on "relationship" BF, GF status never materialized with these lovely ladies recently, I still have still remained very close friends with all of them, that has been a practice of mine s
since my first ever girlfriend back in high school, which I think is important.

Recently ent to The BIFF Asian Film Fest Red Carpet Movie Premier wearing my new comfy grey slippers...ya. #ThatsHowiRoll

I also turned 32 on August 17th. Hard to believe.

 Great dinner at my favorite restaurant ever, Saori.

Also, my son Ethan just started grade 3, which is even harder to believe. He is 7 in this picture, but looks 13. Once again he is the biggest in his class, just like I always used to be...Can't wait till my trip to California to have my month long vacation with him soon, planing some fun stuff, Disneyland and lots of other stuff. Gonna be great :-)

I also just bought what may be the best investment I have ever made as a birthday present to myself.

                                                                         Easy Rider.

Riding this thing is sooo fun, fast and efficient cruising on this beast, its brand is "The Beaver" so I named it "The Beav" for short.

So all in all, its been a busy but eventful and awesome summer here in Asia...

I'll post more pics and videos from my last trip to the Philippines soon...been too busy (aka lazy) to do so yet.

Hope your 2012 summer was as sunny & fun as mine was, but it always goes too fast.

Hoping for an "Endless Summer" this year...

PS I am getting back into the blogging / marketing biz game again harder than ever and will be making a pretty exciting post shortly about a fun new project I am working on, if you have ever wanted to start your own blog or website, I will be sharing some incredible tools, resources and opportunities to do so in the near future...fun times ahead my friends.

Cheers to the good life,

Quinton

SIX.  Be   engaged at least six months before you get   married.

SEVEN.  Believe   in love at first   sight.

EIGHT.  Never   laugh at anyone's dreams. People who don't  have  dreams don't have much.

FOURTEEN.   Remember  that great  love and great achievements involve  great  risk..

FIFTEEN.   Say  'bless you' when  you hear someone sneeze.

SIXTEEN.   When  you lose, don't  lose the   lesson.

SEVENTEEN.   Remember  the three  R's: Respect for self; Respect for  others;  and Responsibility for all your actions.

EIGHTEEN.   Don't  let a little  dispute injure a great friendship.

Mayonnaise Jar & Two Beers

Got this email the other day, thought I'd post and share it here because I feel it has a powerful message we often forget in the 'buss-i -ness' of life.

When things in your life seem almost too much to handle, when 24 hours in a day are not enough, remember the mayonnaise jar and the 2 Beers.

A professor stood before his philosophy class and had some items in front of him.

When the class began, he wordlessly picked up a very large an   empty mayonnaise jar   and proceeded to fill it with golf balls.

He then asked the students if the jar was full.

They agreed that it was.

The professor then picked up a box of pebbles and poured them into the jar. He shook the jar lightly.

The pebbles rolled into the open areas between the golf balls.

He then asked the students again if the jar was full.

They agreed it was.

The professor next picked up a box of sand and poured it into the jar.

Of course, the sand filled up everything else.

He asked once more if the jar was full.

The students responded with a unanimous 'yes'.

The professor then produced two beers from under the table and poured the entire contents into the jar effectively filling the empty space between the sand.

The students laughed.

'Now', said the professor as the laughter subsided, 'I want you to recognize that this jar represents your life.

The golf balls are the important things... your family, your children, your health, your friends and your favorite passions ... and if everything else was lost and only they remained, your life would still be full.

The pebbles are the   other things that matter like your job, your house and your car ...

The sand is everything else...the small stuff.

'If you put the sand into the jar first,' he continued, 'there is no room for the pebbles or the golf balls.

The same goes for life.

If you spend all your time and energy on the small stuff you will never have room for the things that are important to you.

Pay attention to the things that are critical to your happiness.

Spend time with your children.

Spend time with your parents.

Visit with grandparents.

Take your spouse out to dinner.

Play another 18 holes of golf.

There will always be time to clean the house, fix the disposal or deal with things from your job.

Take care of the golf balls first...
the things that really matter.

Set your priorities.

The rest is just sand.

One of the students raised her hand and inquired what the beer represented.

The professor smiled and said,
'I'm glad you asked.'

The beer just shows you that no matter how full your life may seem, there's always room for a couple of beers with a friend.

Please share this with someone you care about.

I JUST DID!"

"The Dream Team" Documentary

Hands down, the best team EVER assembled in ANY sport

Michael Jordan

Magic Johnson

Larry Bird

Charles Barkely

Scottie Pippin

and the rest of the gang of best players to step on a court...

I was actually lucky enough to see the Dream Team #3 in Sydney Australia in 2000 with Kevin Garnett, Ray Allen, Jason Kidd, Vince Carter and the rest, but no one can match up against the "original" DREAM TEAM.

"A Father First"

Miami Heat start Dwayne Wade has a book out called "Father First"

After watching this video, it makes me wish I had more opportunities to spend with my own son...

I just have faith that our time will come to spend a lot more time together after this 'long distant parenting' saga wraps up after I'm currently working overseas and go back home. But thanks to Skype video Ethan & I have stayed very connected.  Thank God for technology :-)

But being a single father, I can really relate to this songs lyrics:

"I wonder what your doing, I wonder were you are, there's oceans in between us, but that's not very far"

Indeed, currently everything feels so "blurry"

A 15 Year Old Kids Poem...Very Insightful.

Got this email sent to me today, I just copied & pasted it below because it made me think that this 15 year old kid has a point:

"POEM BY A 15 yr. OLD SCHOOL KID" who got an A+ for this entry
Sent: Wednesday, August 01, 2012 2:23 PM
To: Undisclosed-Recipient:;
Subject: Fw: The Lord's Prayer from a Kid's point of view
Since the Pledge of Allegiance AND The Lord's Prayer IS NOT ALLOWED in Public s
chools anymore because the word 'God' is mentioned

A 15 y/o kid in Arizona wrote the attached NEW School prayer:

"New Pledge of Allegiance"
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Now I sit me down in school
Where praying is against the rule
For this great nation under God
Finds mention of Him very odd.
If scripture now the class recites,
It violates the Bill of Rights.
And anytime my head I bow
Becomes a Federal matter now.
Our hair can be purple, orange or green ,
That's no offense; it's a freedom scene..
The law is specific, the law is precise.
Prayers spoken aloud are a serious vice
For praying in a public hall
Might offend someone with no faith at all..
In silence alone we must meditate,
God's name is prohibited by the state.
We're allowed to cuss and dress like freaks,
And pierce our noses, tongues and cheeks...
They've outlawed guns, but FIRST the Bible.
To quote the Good Book makes me liable.
We can elect a pregnant Senior Queen,
And the 'unwed daddy,' our Senior King.
It's 'inappropriate' to teach right from wrong,
We're taught that such 'judgments' do not belong..
We can get our condoms and birth controls,
Study witchcraft, vampires and totem poles ..
But the Ten Commandments are not allowed,
No word of God must reach this crowd.
It's scary here I must confess,
When chaos reigns the school's a mess.
So, Lord, this silent plea I make:
Should I be shot; My soul please take!
Amen
If you aren't ashamed to do this, Please pass this message on. Jesus said, 'If you are ashamed of me, I will be ashamed of you before my Father.'
~~~~~~~~~~~AWESOME~~~~~~~~~~
Not ashamed? Then, Please pass this on!

Overcoming Adversity:"Turn #MissionImpossible into #MissionComplete". An email I will never forget

My new favorite quote I coined after reading & reflecting on the email I received below:

"Turn #MissionImpossible into #MissionComplete" QC

For mothers day I sent my mom a package from here in South Korea that contained a bunch of facial products b/c I recently realized why Asian women age so well is because they have and use a ton of natural products that we do not have in the western marketplaces...so I sent her that and this card & picture:

This is the email I got back from her copy and pasted below and I have to admit, I got a little teary eyed.

To put the context in perspective after a skype call I had with my parents and my son (my parents were in Edmonton Canada, my son was in Orange Country California and I was in South Korea Asia) and we do this weekly.

Yup, thats my boy with a basketball on his head :)

Here is what she wrote below (I put some details in to give it context to the reader who does not know the inside scoop, to help fill in the blanks)

*Disclaimer, I did not post this email here to be some 'self righteous super hero or Avenger wanna be', but I was really shocked when I read and realized all the things have have happened recently and how intense this year and most of my life really has been....

"Hi Quinton,

I just wanted to say that I went to bed after the call with us all, and I actually HAD TIME to reflect on how things have gone, and have been, the last few years.

I have been well aware of the tremendous struggle that you have had all the way along, obviously.

But what you have gone through, and had to deal with, is beyond human strength, in order to keep contact with Ethan (my son who I fought for in a 6 year court custody battle) and then, like tonight, to care enough to take the time to get us all together to talk on the phone after negotiating & re scheduling many times with his mother, while you are at work in the middle of your day, half way across the world by using the technology available juggling with our 3 different time zones and what video calling technology which you installed is an absolute WONDER to me to begin with...

Then your intense health scare with the detection of a lump of a possible cancer treatment while in Asia dealing with doctors who spoke little to no English going to the hospitals there and having all those medical tests is an unimaginable experience to have to had to dealt with and thank God they all came back negative!!

Wow, what a relief that was!!

PLUS the recent investment accounts that you have set up & researched on your own to set up financially and seeking investments to include us to manage and invest ours, all the while also managing the Vancouver properties from overseas AND having to deal with that last tenant that tried to take advantage of you and take you to court and how you WON that battle as well, against all odds from the other side of the planet via a court conference call!

And if that was not enough, on top of all of that, dealing with 2 deaths in our family just one week apart after my brother and your grandmother died over Christmas holiday while you were working all alone in a foreign land were no one speaks your language, to be able to have steady work, and dealing with a supervisor that has been enough to drive you absolutely crazy, and not quitting and honoring your contract and now applying to the different universities to get the best offer for your next step in life to give you the free time to be with your son at months at a time, and continue to pay down the debt you incurred while trying [and succeeding] in the court process keeping in touch with Ethan (my son), again, AGAINST ALLLLLL ODDS....

But tonight, I just HAD to get out of bed, and come back to the computer, and acknowledge allll this that you have done.

I don't think there is anyone else who has walked with you as closely  and consistently as I have, over these last VERY VERY VERY difficult years.

And I want to say that you are truly an incredible human being, to have persisted, every day, in doing what you have had to do in order to accomplish what you have accomplished. AND I AM INCREDIBLY PROUD OF YOU QUINTON.

THERE IS NOBODY ELSE WHO WOULD BE ABLE TO KNOW WHAT I KNOW ABOUT YOU,
EXCEPT GOD HIMSELF.

Do you remember when you called me from Montreal and told me that you and Angel, (Ethan's mom) was expecting, and I said to you,

"Finish what you have started.."?

Well, I have seen every day, over the last years, your struggle to do this.

And thank you for not giving up, and for continuing on.

YOU are the one who will benefit the most forever, from your faithfulness in keeping on, through all this, because of how it has formed you.

It will be the making of you.

IT IS INCREDIBLE IN MY EYES. ABSOLUTELY INCREDIBLE.

CONGRATULATIONS. IN MY EYES YOU ARE A SAINT. AMEN. AND I AM NOT EXAGGERATING.

YOU HAVE OVERCOME INCREDIBLE INCREDIBLE ODDS TO ACCOMPLISH WHAT YOU HAVE.

And that's all I have to say..
And things WILL get easier from now on. They just will...

And I will continue to be with you, and continue to fast and pray for you,

in all that you will ever need, as much as I am able to.

This is what life is about.

You HAVE BEEN living life to the fullest, by rising to the challenge that has been before you, and DOING EVERYTHING that you have been able to do
And good for you...

I love you very much, Quinton. [and so does God haha much more than me]

Mom"

Wow, well first of all, I am definitely not a "saint", but I guess all parents that that of their children...  but I can honestly say that my mother is a saint, this is a pic of her next to her mothers grave, Ruth Pinder.

But talk about a heart felt email to read, it was really wonderful to know that at least one person has observed and acknowledged the efforts that I have made to be the best person I can me....even though it has not been an easy road, its been a experience for growth.

And just to be clear, because some people think I am in living in Asia just partying it up and messing around, the truth is I am here to work, save $ and make investments to and pay off the tens of thousands of dollars that the 6 year court case and child support (that I have never missed a month) that has set me back financially.

So I am currently overseas to work my ass off, get back on track and return home a better man to be the best father I can be to my little man.

However, that substantial investment of time, money and a roller coaster of emotions I made 7 years ago, to go to court for my son and my fatherly rights (for 6 straight years), and to also work to make amends with his mother is the best decision I've ever made and will always be the best investment I have EVER made or will ever make to ensure I have, keep and am able to maintain the best relationship with my son I can...

And I am happy to report that even after a lot of challenges, that I have done just that.

#MissionComplete :)

A great book to put 'fatherhood after separation' in perspective is and how challenging it is,  refer this book above to any single father, its a must read.

So before you judge someone or someones actions, take a closer look because you don't know the reasons why, or what they are doing for the greater purpose that what is only visible surface deep.

The only thing that can ever top that letter I got from my mother above, is a similar one from my son....

I can just pray that he will one day understand how much I have sacrificed to be a part of his life, and how much I will always love and cherish him...

My best,

PS I was fortunate enough to take this mentality and ability to 'just do it' to over come obstacles in my first business en devour and be one of the very few people who actually 'make it' in the home business online marketing arena.

I was actually even interviewed and added to this speaker line up on a CD series coaching program that included Mark Victor Hansen, the co founder of "Chicken Soup For The Soul" who is Jack Canfield's business partner from the movie "The Secret".

So that was a huge honor to be apart of that project helping to inspire others to also overcome their adversities & persevere

Stoked to have my name on the same speaker list with some of the hero's & industry legends:

The best part of all of this is yesterday when I was talking to my son about a basketball move, "I said that would be impossible" and he quickly responded stating "dad, nothing is impossible".

That was one of the proudest moments of my life hearing him adopt & share this limitless and positive mindset I have worked relentlessly to develop.

Sounds like I have a lot to learn from this kid of mine :-)

"Onward and upward" as my mom would always say...

My 1st FX Trade...Slaughtered

I've been studying the economy, investing and finance more in the last 12 months that I have in the last 31 years of my life.

I recently just entered the FX (forex) market yesterday after studying it for the last couple months and got slaughtered on my 1st trade making a rookie mistake by not installing one plug in to enable the software to close trades.

Long story short, I had 16 trades open and could not close any of them, resulting in me loosing a couple hundred dollars in under 14 minutes of 'trading'

Wow!

I had to call NYC from South Korea to freeze my account until the plug in was installed.

I found out that the trades would have been profitable, IF it was installed properly (which is a good sign :)

I am just greatful that I stopped it when I did or it would have drained my entire account.

All I could do is laugh, yet another life learning lesson and I will be back at it again tomorrow....
